IFFOR Funds Research into Newsgroup Abuse

The International Foundation for Online Responsibility (IFFOR) is pleased to provide a grant of $5,000 to The Internet Watch Foundation (IWF) and The Lucy Faithfull Foundation (LFF) to research the use of newgroups in disseminating child sexual abuse images.

Working in partnership with LFF, the IWF will run a research project aimed at understanding how sex offenders use the Internet to access and maintain access to child abuse images and videos. The objective of the research project is to use this intelligence to direct resources more effectively in disrupting the online availability of child abuse images and ultimately striving to eradicate this content from the Internet.

The project’s initial results will be completed and launched on 27 March in London at an event sponsored by British Telecom.

The Internet Watch Foundation (IWF) is a not-for-profit charity with a focus on industry self-regulation and acts as the UK Hotline for reporting online criminal content. It works closely with newsgroups providers, among many others, to remove or block online images and videos of child sexual abuse. In 2011, it took action against more than 13,000 webpages and newsgroups.

The Lucy Faithfull Foundation (LFF) is dedicated to reducing the risk of children being sexually abused. It works with families that have been affected by abuse. In 2002, the Foundation established the prevention campaign, Stop it Now! UK and Ireland which supports adults to protect children through providing information, education and training.
